The Great Horned Owl was found injured along a roadside by a woman motorist. She put the bird in her car and almost lost a leg, Bradley said. There is as much as 400 pounds of “crushing power” behind an attacking owl and when that power was concentrated in one talon, the woman’s leg was “shredded,” Bradley said.
The Red Tailed Hawk is one of the buteos, the family characterized by long rounded wings and a long tail. The buteo soar and ride along air thermals; once the sight prey and start to attack, they achieve speeds of up to 150 miles per hour, then pull up within a few feet of the ground. Some hawks are said to be able to see a mouse moving in the grass three hundred feet below and three miles away.
