Beverly Massie said she felt the overcrowding reflected “poor management” on the part of the high school. Too many students had signed up for this class last spring and they knew it, she said. Norton disagreed, he didn’t think the high school had any indication back in the spring that the class could be this crowded.
“I asked last spring and was told that there would be 58 students in Algebra One,” Mrs. Massie said. Fleetwood nodded. The class enrollment has dropped from what the registration figures last spring had indicated.
“But what alternatives do we have?” Fleetwood asked. “We can’t split the class because we don’t have another classroom. And if we had another classroom we’d need another teacher.”
E. N. MONTAGUE suggested that the matter be brought to the attention of the Supervisors, “that we have a problem and we can’t cope.” The School Board has told the Supervisors about overcrowding problems for two years, Montague said. The high school was designed for 350 students and has 425, he said.
Expansion is the only answer, several school board members concluded, either through an addition or modular classroom units.
