Art Wright, a Rappahannock resident who works for the Wilderness Society in Washington, D.C., told fellow RLEP members that Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson has withdrawn his support for the wilderness area proposal for the Shenandoah National Park. Senator Harry Byrd still supports the proposal, Wright said.
Apparently, wilderness opponents in Madison County have persuaded Robinson to not support the bill, Wright said. He had brought more information for RLEP members to take home with them, correcting what he said were misconceptions which are often spread by wilderness opponents. Wilderness area designation will not mean that the Park service will allow forest fires to burn throughout the park or onto private land. It does not mean that roads, trucks or helicopters are prohibited from the park in case of emergency. Under the wilderness legislation, the Park Service may take any action in an emergency which they have done in the past. But Wilderness designation will prevent the construction of new roads, lodges, permanent campsites or sewage disposal areas in the wilderness area.
Wright asked that RLEP members write to Robinson and ask that he support the wilderness proposal.
RLEP members accepted unanimously the report of the nominating committee.
