THE VIRGINIA State Board of Agriculture and Commerce held two public hearings in Richmond on August 6. The first was to consider repealing a part of VDAC’s rules and regulations for enforcement of the Virginia Fertilizer Law. The proposed change in the regulation, which was approved by the Board, deletes the requirement of a minimum magnesium content in tobacco fertilizer.
The second public hearing was held for the Board to consider the adoption of rules and regulations pertaining to the use of qualifying terms for “ground beef.” The regulations, which were fussed by the Board after making two amendments, will require retailers to either label or display a placard with the statement: “Does Not Exceed (blank) Percent Fat” for their ground beef when such terms as “lean,” “extra lean,” “super lean,” or “premium” are used to modify the term ground beef.
