Both Luke and Supervisor H. B. Wood wanted to know what areas of control over the Welfare budget were retained by the county.
Mrs. Buntin answered that the Supervisors could not cut funds from any individual state-mandated program, only from the total amount requested. (The only nonmandated program administered by the Rappahannock Welfare office is general relief and the appropriations request in that category is $1,435 lower than the current year’s).
“We don’t want to do anything illegal,” Luke said. “If you had to make cuts in this budget, what would you recommend?” he asked Mrs. Buntin... . ,,
“I don’t know,” she answered. “You asked me that last year. . .I’m the wrong person to ask because I’m so totally involved in my programs, I can't single one out. I’ve never provided you with a padded budget and I never intend to,” she stated.
