To the Editor,
Recently I had occasion near sunset to drive over back roads in our community to our home. Despite the disastrous drought, the hills and fields were green, and I thought that if any place today is Eden, it is surely Rappahannock County.
How has it happened that Rappahannock has been spared the surfeit of strip developments, monotonous clumps of houses, lines of gasoline stations, billboards, and neon lights that desecrate other landscapes? Can so much beauty and worth survive?
As is true here in Rappahannock, all over America the struggle for community planning goes on. But the results are proving equivocal everywhere. I have come to believe, after study and thought, that this is true because we haven’t yet broadly enough appreciatSd the need for a national policy to preserve farm land and the ^ integrity of communities, large and small. Nor are the intrinsic values which cities, towns and farm communities contribute to a wholesome society generally agreed npon. ,
