Much of our family, community and state destiny for the next four years may be decided by some of the winners of Virginia’s Democratic Primary elections, coming up fast on Tuesday, June 14. Enough is known for this newspaper now to make its choices of the primary candidates we believe will serve us best should they win the November general elections.
ANDREW MILLER Born in Fairfax, 44-year-old Andrew P. Miller goes to the voters in the governor’s race with a seven-year tested record as Virginia’s attorney general. His opponent in the primary, Norfolk’s liberal populist Henry Howell is a spunky hard campaigner best known to Virginians, before, during and since his term as the state’s lieutenant governor, for his running battles against “die big boys.”
The choice in this race goes to Miller on the ground that both his personal character and public record show the promise of outstanding leadership for Virginia. With intelligence and hard work, he quietly restructured the office of attorney general to provide the people of this state with a highly talented, hardworking and specialized legal team which has both performed better legal services and saved the state millions of dollars.
It is significant that as' attorney general, Andy Miller gained the respect of liberals and conservatives alike and earned a national organization’s acclaim last year as Attorney General of The Year.
It is further remarkable that in this year’s campaign he has gained the endorsements of state leaders from right and left political wings, as well as the support of many prominent independents and Republicans. His philosophically and politically diverse supporters are comfortable with Miller’s calm, thoughtful and businesslike approach to state government and the issues.
In many ways—in a certain warm Southern openness, in razor sharp mind, in commitment to human equality and in a conservative outlook on spending the taxpayer’s money—Andy Miller and Jimmy Carter are much alike. In the governor’s mansion, Virginia would be gifted with Mr. Miller’s lovely, talented and hardworking wife Doris as First Lady. They are equally outstanding individuals.
On the specific grounds of executive experience, capacity to attract and build industry and employment, and in the high calibre of people he has around him, Andrew P. Miller is a clear choice for Virginia.
