City was growing. They managed to carve out Central Park from acres of valuable commercial property. If we had it to do all over again today, would there be Central Park as it survives? In another instance, some people felt we should have National Parks and one by one they were created. Would legislators today dare to set aside those vast national parks? The answer is uncertain.
In Rappahannock, there are farmers struggling to make a go of farming land which they could profitably sell to developers. The lures and profits are real. In view of the world-wide need for increased food production, it - is generally believed that farm land will steadily increase in value as farm land. If our farms are otherwise' developed, they will be lost forever to farming. How can we weather the years of transition when the means to implement sound policies are so rudimentary? How can we' convince land owners and public representatives that to keep Rappahannock, a farming community is to preserve our wealth intact?
