Without fail someone says “I’m not feeling too well but I thank the Good Lord for what I can do, for what I have” and everyone will agree. Sometimes we sing. Sometimes we’re all quiet, moving through the beauty that is Rappahannock’s and noticing the small changes of time that build and build until a person who is young like myself becomes the age of those I’m transporting.

I drive the van for this program because of what I get from doing it: love, appreciation, an important perspective on my life that only those who have lived many years can give me, historical knowledge and, of course, my garden is benefiting. My only living grandmother is far away in New York City and I miss her. I have adopted grandparent-friends close by, as my life is less complete without this contact with older people.

Scorned? I have heard scorn for the program because of its being considered "Welfare”. I see it differently. All of our senior citizens have worked hard for many years and as their bodies claim a time of rest, many are not as able to have the fellowship with peers they once enjoyed.
