Luke said the county would want to include more than just locator coordinates on any system adopted. Data that would enable officials to program various alternatives for tax and assessment rates would be particularly useful, he noted.
"There’s quite a measure of difference” in costs between putting in locator coordinates and automating assessment records, said Barrett. He estimated that the figure for keypunching a minimum amount of data to benefit the Treasurer and Commissioner of Revenue would be $1,000. “I’m not able to give you a figure for geocoding,” he added.
“That’s what costs ten cents a parcel,” interjected Wunderlich, noting that this cost figure wouldn’t include data on slope or land cover that the Planners might want to include.
Keypunch Coding
Barrett told the Planners that there is more expense involved in coding data for key punching than in keypunching itself. Someone in the county offices, he said, could learn to code the information. Barrett suggested that the Planners consider using Arlington County’s computer facilities rather than those at Piedmont Vocational School. “I know they would be pleased to do that service for another county,” he said, adding that Arlington would do the work at their cost. He volunteered to ask an Arlington representative to contact the Rappahannock Planners.
