the crop of teachers and administrators has been thoroughly picked over. Most of the good ones, the ones with better credentials and experience, have been hired.
Rappahannock’s difficulties in finding a replacement for an elementary administrator are compounded by the county’s housing shortage—another area where Carter has first hand knowledge. A new principal surely wouldn’t be impressed by having only two weeks before the start of school to find a home for his family in a county where it sometimes takes a year (or forever) to find an adequate dwelling.
It is our recollection that the new seventh grade science teacher was presented to the School Board several months ago for employment approval as the fifth-sixth combination teacher. We’ve since learned that she expected to hold that position up to the time she was introduced at Monday’s teacher’s meeting as the new science instructor. At the last School Board meeting, several parents protested against Mrs. Baine’s reassignment, telling the Board that they had looked forward to having her instruct their children in science. If the parents, Mrs. Baines and the School Board members are all unhappy with the switch, we fail to see any compelling reason to uphold Carter’s assignment. If one has been stated, we missed it.
