“Firewood will warm you twice.” I’m not sure where I heard this saying, but to put it to the test, you merely have to spend an hour or two at the chopping block, early on a November morning, dripping with sweat in subfreezing air. That same wood will warm you again the next year, with your feet propped up to the fireplace on a windy winter’s night.
Heating with wood has such a charm and a practicality that hundreds of homes in Rappahannock County rely on wood as their main scource of heat. According to the U.S. Census, this amounted to nearly one third of the total number of homes in the county in 1970. Also, there is an exceptional market for firewood in the urban areas to the northeast, where a cord of wood can be sold for $60 or more.
