Results of the increased patrol indicate troopers drove 50,823 miles and made 2,269 arrests. Of these arrests, 1,647 were for speeding, 90 for reckless driving and 11 for driving under the influence of alcohol. A total of 43 accidents were investigated during this period.
Although speeding arrests were high in number, there were several other very significant indicators that the program was successful. During this period, troopers were able to assist more than 1,500 motorists for various reasons and the visibility of troopers undoubtedly helped to discourage potential violators.
Through July 7, 1977, a toatl of 488 persons were killed on Virginia’s highways as compared to 500 at that time last year. As of the morning of August 4, thp State Police tally shows a total of 583 highway fatalities, 16 fewer than this time last year.
