Amissville firemen report a Mairly successful carnival which was held three nights last week, closing on Saturday, in spite of the fact that the carnival grounds and buildings were given up for the dual laning of the highway this fall.

The grand prize, one thousand dollars, went to H. J. Henry of Alexandria; the $500 to Samuel Embery of Rectortown and the five Savings Bonds were given Randolph Clater of Washington, Va., Chris Soana, Paul Dunnagan and Frances Carter, all of Amissville and Bill Lacey of Rixeyville.

Parade prize winners included: best appearing and equipped fire apparatus from town over 500 population, Warrenton, first and Front Royal, second; same, under 500, The Plains and Remington; best appearing fire company and men, New Baltimore.

Apparatus coming longest distance, King George; oldest apparatus in service, Washington; best appearing and equipped rescue unit, Warrenton and Remington, first and second, respectively.

Fredericksburg Fire Department had the best antique vehicle; Smokey the Bear was judged best civic float while Settle’s Garage, Flint Hill was best commercial float; best comic entry were group of clowns; best marching unit, Amissville Cub Scouts and Fredericksburg was best appearing Ladies Auxiliary. Jeanne Hoak of Luray was named best Honorary Fire Chief. Senior Majorettes placing first were the Redcoats and Topettes, second; junior group, Culpeper Pepperettes and Topettes; tiny tots, Redcoats and Toppettes. Betty Ann Kemp was named best solor majorette and Dana Keefer of Berryville was second. According to Amissville Fire Chief, the patronage of the public, the contributions of food, time and effort of the community are appreciated. Only through the support of the public can the volunteer organizations continue to serve.
