young timber stand which will remove the less valuable trees (such as hickory) and trees which are crooked or diseased. These cuttings will actually increase the productivity of the stand since the best trees will be allowed more growing space. Second, when a mature stand is cut for timber, there are always some parts of the trees which aren't usable as sawlogs because they are crooked or too small. These tree-tops and branches are ideal firewood material.
Now let’s consider the special case where a landowner wishes to utilize his woodlot primarily for firewood production.
