hickory, oaks, and ash. Red maple, yellow poplar, and pines are less desirable (although pine will make good kindling). Improvement cuttings should remove undesirable trees at a relatively small size to favor the growth of the best trees.
2. Be very careful not to create a “hole” in the stand by concentrating the cutting in one area. This would be wasted growing space that should be utilized. It is better to have a poor tree growing in a certain space than to have nothing at all.
3. Utilize all of the wood that you can, right down to the smallest branches. 4. Finally, the amount of wood that you will need to ciit would be reduced by properly seasoning the wood for a year or so, and by burning the wood in an efficient air-tight heater. This type of stove will certainly pay for itself within a couple of years, considering the fuel savings. Common sense and careful forethought in the selection of trees to cut will assure a sustained yield of firewood indefinitely.
