The most practical program for most homeowners to use to meei the lawn’s nutrient need* calls for use of a complete fertilizer containing about two to four times as much nitrogen as it does of phosphate and potash. The material should be applied between mid-August and mid-September. The earlier date is applicable to the mountains and cooler areas of the state.
Fertilizer should be applied at a rate to provide one to one-and-a-half pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. The amount of fertilizer used would be determined by its nitrogen content.
Then between Oct. 1 and Nov. 15, and at least four weeks after the first application, the lawn should again be fertilized with the same material used at the same rate. A third application should be made in December. Information on this and similar lawn feeding programs using different analysis of fertilizers is available from County and City Virginia Tech Extension Offices throughout the State.
