Besides the Sperryville health hazard, Luke said he personally envisioned sewage problems in the town of Washington at some future date.
He noted that the Town Council had stated that there is no sewer system planned for the town but at the same time, said Luke, some of the septic fields “bubble up on the top of the ground in wet weather.”
The situation is complicated, he continued, by an old water system with leaks and infiltration of ground water—infiltration that could be contaminated by the malfunctioning septic fields.
Expansion Capability
County engineer Fanning Baumgardner interjected that the proposed plant has a capability for expansion above 30,000 capacity, even though such expansion is not planned, and could handle 50,000 gallons with enlarged lagoons and increased chlorine treatment.
Agnew asked if there were any evapo-transpiration beds being used for sewage disposal in Rappahannock. She explained that this system sprays aerated effluent on a raised bed and works well in areas where the earth is non-porous.
