The functions of the state forest service are: (1) to protect our forest resources (most of them are privatelyowned) by fire prevention and suppression and (2) to advise the landowner on proper management . of . his woodlands, and to assist him in carrying out any practices that are recommended.
Many forestry services are available to landowners free of charge. These services are described in two publications, “Forestry Service to Landowners”, and “Forest Management Programs Available Through the Virginia Division of Forestry”, which can be picked up at the Extension Office at Washington.
