While resource recovery is the wave of the fiiture, Aziel said that the mechanized junk business is still not economically viable unless the cost of doing something else with the trash is considered.
He advised communities to consider what can be salvaged from trash in order to cut down on the volume going into a landfill.
Aziel noted that the recent hard winter and the forecast for this year plus government action on home insulation and fuel conservation had increased the demand for the newspapers that account for a large portion of landfill trash.
Newspaper now brings $20 to $25 per ton, in part due to the demand for the material for use as insulation manufactured by plants in Charlottesville, Woodstock, Richmond and other locations.
