Your son has just been arrested for reckless driving. Your dog bit the mailman. You’re being sued for divorce. You need a lawyer fast.
But if you are like most people in Rappahannock, the chances are you do not know where to tind a competent lawyer who charges what you believe are reasonable rates.
A recent survey by the American Bar Association underscored the magnitude of the problem. Only about one-third of those surveyed had ever consulted a lawyer, and only about a quarter had actually retained a lawyer.
Many people appear to avoid lawyers because they think legal fees are too high. Over 60 per cent of the respondents agreed with the statement that “most lawyers charge more for their services than they are worth.”
It should be remembered that most lawyers in Virginia have had at least seven years of special schooling, and sometimes have spent additional time in apprenticeship. Action by such experienced counsel can be more economical and productive than choosing someone who staggers to the solution to a legal problem with wasted time and dangerous untutored approach.
Ordinarily a lawyer’s practice requires the maintenance of an experienced secretary, and the detailed costs of maintaining an office and law library. In the future, advertising may possibly become an additional expense.
You may now be hearing much more about lawyers and their services. For the Supreme Court has lifted restrictions on advertising legal fees
