When winter winds howl right through your living room, you can bet a good bit of your fuel bill is going toward heating up the great outdoors. With the rising costs of producing heat, fewer and fewer Americans seem willing to let it get away without a fight.

Engineers use the term “infiltration” to describe heat lost by cold air coming in and heat escaping through the cracks and crevices in our homes.

“Wind infiltration” is where winds blowing against one side of a house force cold air in one side and heated about the other side.

A much more subtle cause of drafts is called "chimney effect infiltration.” This is where cold air seeps through cracks and crevices around the roof. On a still day, this chimney effect can be equivalent to a ten mile an hour wind blowing against the house.

A drafty old home can easily have a full air change taking place every twenty' minutes. This means all your expensive heated air is being replaced by cold air from the outside three times in just one hour. It’s a great way to keep your furnace busy.
