The first commercial peanut crop in the United States was grown by Dr. Matthew Harris in 1844 in Sussex County. Peanuts were already to be found in Virginia when the first settlers landed. At that time they were growing in a wild state.
The first recorded drought in Virginia following the settlement at Jamestown occured in 1618. The drought was followed by a severe storm so that the settlers were once again dependent on the Indians for food.
There have been many droughts over the years in Virginia but the one that is listed by most people as the worst in the history of the state occured in 1930. There was a drop of 43 per cent in the value of crops from 1929. Rainfall was 17 inches less than average. Corn was reduced to 35 per cent of normal and hay 50 per cent. The great drought drove many bootleggers out of business because they couldn’t find enough water to manufacture their illicit whiskey. - - O' * nifej «
