It’s simple to mount a floor sweep across the bottom of a door so it brushes against the threshold when it closes. Then, too, special thresholds are available with a compressible plastic insert which seals against the bottom of the door. Don’t forget though, that weatherstripping needs to be applied completely around the door, not just to the bottom. If your existing weatherstripping isn’t doing its job, it should be adjusted or replaced.

You can usually mount something like spring bronze in the side track and at the meeting rails of double hung windows. Where the window comes down against the sill we might use an adhesivebacked foam or a vinyl tubing which is tacked in place.

Many people use multiple layers of adhesive-backed foam placed on the edge of sliding windows and doors so it will crush against the frame when they are closed.

Don’t forget too that warm air can readily leave a home by way of an open furnace or fireplace flue. Many people are installing special ducts to supply outside combustion
