Now the South faces the challenge of growing its Third Forest. The South must provide most of the nation’s wood products by the year 2000, or more than twice as much as the region produces today. The South has a favorable climate that enables trees to grow faster than the western forests.
There is more forestland in the South offering a potential for timber growth that is not found in any other region.
36 Percent Properly Managed
Today, only about 36 percent of our southern forests are properly managed. Most of this properly managed forest land is owned by large industries and by the federal government.
The remaining is owned by a million small private landowners, most of whom are not applying good forest management programs. Therefore, the big challenge of creating the Third forest lies with the private landowner.
The Third Forest concept will only work if a private landowner of forest land helps in this endeavor and practices good forest management practices.
