In nappahannock (county the wild turkey still flourish in our woodlands as they lived many thousand years ago. This Thanksgiving Day will find their progeny gracing our tables as in the days we were English colonies.
Our fields, our forests, streams and sky still hold the core of nature’s cleanliness and beauty. But to have and to hold these beauties we must restrain our use of energy; seek new sources for the power of our machines; and curtail the use of nature’s bounties until we find new ways for their production.
Since we Virginians were the originators of the Thanksgiving holiday, it becomes our duty and our honor to celebrate it with all the dignity and joy our land provides. During quiet periods of contemplation on this day, let us give thanks for the wildlife which sustained us on our arrival in this land and still give much to the richness of our life here.
Let us give thanks for the once bounteous caches of glag and oil within the earth, and make a quiet resolution to conserve them until new ways are found to maintain our way of living.
Our schools and shops will be closed, but our churches will be open to await our thanks to God.
