a wnonower planting project undertaken by the State Department of Highways and Transportation and the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs has been chosen as one of the nation’s outstanding example of roadside landscaping.
Commissioner John E. Harwood said today the U. S. Department of Transportation has selected Virginia’s “Operation Wildflower” as the second best landscape project in its annual nationwide judging of “The Highway and Its Environment.’’
“We are tremendously pleased with this recognition of these cooperative efforts between the Highway and Transportation Department and the Federation of Garden Clubs. I think the project itself, of which we are very proud, reflects Virginia’s belief that highways can and should be aesthetically pleasing,” Harwood said.
The wildflower planting project was undertaken in 1976 as part of the Virginia Bicentennial Spruce Up Campaign initiated by Governor Mills E. Godwin, Jr. It also was part of a nationwide program started by the National Council of
