“Be suspicious,” Mitchell warned, “especially if the retreader doesn’t offer a warranty or if the price of retreads is significantly less than half of new tires.”
On the question of when to purchase tires, Mitchell recommended that the tires be changed before they get down to the last 16th of an inch of tread.
“The near-bald tire is more likely to skid than one with adequate tread and is many more times more likely to puncture or blow out than one with more than 16th of an inch,” he said.
He added that in general for safety, individuals should watch not only the depth of tread but also the evenness of wear. Uneven wear can indicate other problems such an underinflation or misalignment.
