She also urged the board to retain Bloomer’s recommended allocation of $10,300 for payment of premiums on mandatory life insurance. According to Mrs. Kilby, any new teacher entering the profession since 1962 has been required by the state to take out this insurance.
“All our surrounding counties offer some benefits beyond the basic salary,” she said. If approved, the payment of mandatory life insurance will be the first fringe benefit afforded to Rappahannock teachers.
The lack of benefits here, Mrs. Kilby said, has bearing on the number of Rappahannock teachers applying for jobs in surrounding counties. “I’m not sure we have any from surrounding counties applying here,” she added.
Elementary teacher Corina Fountain, president of the RCEA, also spoke in favor of the salary proposal, noting that approval of the seven per cent increase would “still keep us on the bottom line compared to surrounding counties.”
