Instructional Supplies
Mrs. Fountain next asked Bloomer to explain the difference between the basic and recommended budget items for instructional supplies and to give a breakdown of the category.
Bloomer replied that the $4,198 difference between the recommended and basic amounts for instructional supplies was attributable to materials for elementary art classes, should the new art teacher position be approved. If an art teacher is not hired, he said, then the additional art supplies won’t be necessary.
According to Bloomer, the amount recommended for instructional supplies includes $5,625 for vocational education, $3,379 for special education, $2,000 for the gifted and talented program, $9,441 for elementary school supplies and $4,353 for high school supplies.
He noted that the figures for instructional supplies reflected the amount requested by both principals in their budget reports.
Under maintenance of school plants, Bloomer recommended an allocation of $25,000, including $17,000 for repairs to the elementary school roof.
“How will the (remaining) $8,000 be used?” asked Mrs. Fountain. “On snow days, the black top is covered and we have inadequate parking.” She added that snow piles and ice-covered sidewalks created hazards for both students and teachers.
Bloomer explained that the $8,000 will be used for contractual fees for electrical needs, plumbing, painting, glazing on any windows that may need to be replaced and exterminator services.
