Saturday, April 21, will offer Rappahannock County and its neighboring areas a delightful “first”, an evening ‘ at the opera- The School of Music at Catholic University of America under the direction of Dr. Don Wiggins, Assistant Professor of Music, will perform a program of opera scenes at the Washington School Auditorium in Washington.
The School of Music has achieved notable success in the field of opera, presenting two major productions a year. Included have been Puccini’s “La Boheme”; Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos”; Bizet’s “Carmen”; Britten’s "Albert Herring”; Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”; Donizetti’s “Elixir of Love”; and most recently, Donizetti’s “Don Pasqpale”.
In addition to full opera productions, “opera scenes” programs are performed annually. The scenes represent work accomplished through the School of Music’s Opera Workshop. This course, open to graduate and undergraduate voice majors, amplifies the students’ vocal training with the necessary work and experience in characterization and staging.
Music alumni continue to excel in opera. Past winners of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions include Carmen Balthrop and John Carpenter, both of whom are presently on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera Company.
