“If the bridge is abandoned, will the route be maintained?” asked someone in the audience.
A voice from the back yelled that the road was full of potholes and hadn’t been maintained by the highway department for years.
‘‘I hope you all realize we’re in a major restoration effort trying to get the county’s roads back in shape,” Askew said, before interruption by more complaints on state road maintenance.
Luke interjected that the county had already held a road hearing. “We’re not going to discuss complaints here tonight,” he told the crowd.
Askew volunteered to meet with the critic and go over the road in question. “Our people in Rappahannock have knocked themselves out,” he said. In addition to local employees working to get the roads opened, county crews had help from Warrenton, Midland, Manassas, Culpeper and Orange, according to Askew. “I’d like to publicly thank our employees,” he stated.
Askew added that closing the bridge and creating a 'deadend street there wouldn’t affect snow removal priority for the road.
“What about law enforcement in this end of the county?” asked Loomis, reporting that he’d seen trucks violating the bridge’s old eight ton weight limit as well as speeders breaking the 25 mph limit. “Who’s doing something about it?”
Luke answered that the supervisors had no authority over law enforcement. He said argument existed over whether it’s the duty of the state police or the sheriffs department to “patrol the roads.”
Aileen Johnson asked where a turn-around spot would be located if the road ended at the bridge.
"Presumably at Route 600,” Askew answered. “Perhaps the rescue squad will let us use their land,” he said, acknowledging that the department couldn’t condemn property for turnaround space.
