Highway Decision
Pete Estes asked where the idea to close the bridge originated.
“The decision was made in my office,” Askew replied, as at least three voices chorused from the back “Who suggested it?”
Estes countered that the bridge washed out at Rock Mills was being rebuilt immediately while the Sperryville bridge that carried at least 100 times more traffic remained closed.
Mike Wyman maintained that if the highway department had repaired the Sperryville bridge instead of closing it, the structure wouldn’t need to be upgraded to a higher weight limit.
“When that deck came off for repairs, we would have had to put in the additional steel beams,” Askew stated. Preliminary steps on upgrading the bridge were taken last summer, he said. (Continued on Page 10)
