“Everybody here wants the bridge and I have faith we’ll get it,” said Alson Atkins. “But the state has had grave responsibility. County roads were horribly damaged by the storm...I had damage too and I haven’t repaired all of mine yet. I’m still hammering away and so is the highway department. They’re doing a good job but they had a tremendous amount of work here in Rappahannock County.”

As for the speeding problem on the bridge road, Atkins maintained that citizens have the responsibility to notify law enforcement personnel when they see violations.

Asked again why repairs to the Sperryville bridge required a public hearing, Askew said “If we hadn’t had the flood, we probably would have had this meeting two months ago.”

“Before the bridge was closed?” someone asked.

“Probably,” the resident engineer replied. “If there had been no flood, the issue would be resolved and we'd be in the process of either rebuilding or dimantling the bridge,” Askew said.

Responding to charges that nothing has been done to eliminate traffic hazards on the bridge road, Luke said state traffic engineers had been requested to evaluate the intersection in front of the Corner Store and had ruled no light.

Carson Johnsor\ asked if the speed limit on the road could be lowered.

“There’s nothing lower than 25 mph in the state of Virginia,” Julian Brown replied.

“I’ve got the feeling that closing the bridge was an answer to the speeding problem,” Johnson said, insisting this was the wrong approach. “It should be turned over to law enforcement.”
