Resident highway engineer Don Askew and Rappahannock supervisor chairman E. P. Luke sat through two hours of rudeness and antagonism from an openly hostile audience at last Thursday’s hearing on the Sperryville bridge.
Feelings in the community regarding the bridge closing ran high but that’s no excuse for throwi»g common courtesy out the fire hall window.
Askew and Luke were beaten to death with the same question. Over and over again, they were asked who made the decision to close the bridge and over and over again, Askew replied that the decision was made by his office.
Repeatedly, he explained that safety of motorists using the rapidly deteriorating bridge was the only factor in closing the structure.
But the question kept coming back again and again and again. Each time Askew answered, his response met with mutterings of disbelief from throughout the room.
In essence, the audience by its actions was calling Askew a liar. Even then, the com planters took the coward’s way out. No one had the guts to stand up and say “I don’t believe you.’.’
