Wildlife poaching activities have again caused park rangers to close two sections, of Shenandoah National Park to vehicular travel during all hours of darkness from Nov. 12 through Dec. 1, announced Superintendent Robert R. Jacobsen today. The affected portions of the Skyline Drive will be the 31-mile section from Front Royal south to U.S. Highway 211 Thornton Gap, and the 39-mile section from Waynesboro north to U.S. Highway 33 at Swift Run Gap. The park roads in these areas will be closed at dark each day and will not re-open until 8 a.m. on the following mornings. The remaining section of the Skyline Drive, located between U.S,, Highways 211 and 33, and giving access to Big Meadows lodge and campground, will remain open as usual.
Jacobsen said, in announcing this closure, that several deer have already been killed on Skyline Drive by poachers and similar actions during the past four years have proven very successful in countering illegal hunting activity in these sections of the park.
