the request of absent members Clarence Baldwin and chairman E. P. Luke, the Rappahannock supervisors at their December 1 meeting deferred a decision on changes in the county’s property tax system until a special session set for December 15.
The public hearing on proposals to drop personal property taxes on household furnishings, livestock and farm machinery went on as scheduled, however, with speakers from an audience of more than 50 trading arguments for two hours.
Judging from the supervisors’ remarks, both H. B. Wood and J. R. Latham support revisions in the tax system while Hubert Gilkey is opposed. Reportedly, Baldwin and Luke are also against dropping the three classes of personal property from the county’s tax rolls.
Sharon Kilpatrick led off proponents by describing the levy on household goods as an “honesty tax...The more honest you are, the higher the taxes you have to pay...It's put me in a bit of a quandary. If I really wrote down what everything is worth, I was a sucker and if 1 didn’t. I was dishonest.”
