Funeral services with military honors for Luther Bradford Stuart of Amissville were held Sunday at the Amissville United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ray Crockett. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Stuart, 80, a retired captain in the United States Navy, died Thursday, November 27, 1980, at Fauquier Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. May Belle Stuart.
Capt. Stuart was born July 4. 1900, in Boston, Mass., and entered the U. S. Naval Academy in the summer of 1918. He graduated and was commissioned Ensign on June 3, 1922.
Thirty-one years in the Navy followed, including duty aboard the USS Wyoming, Bruce. Reid. Sacramento, Maryland and Portland. Capt. Stuart commanded two ships, the USS Arctic and USS President Jackson.
He retired June 30. 1953. and moved to Amissville where he resided until his death. Among others, Capt. Stuart earned the Bronze Star. Yangtze Service and China Service Medals and the American and Pacific Theater ribbons.
He has been a real estate broker since 1958 and was a member of the Piedmont Board of Realtors, the Retired Officers Association. Naval Academy Alumni and Athletic Associations, the Rappahannock Lions Club and the American Association of Retired Persons.
