Who’s Going To Pay?

Flint Hill orchardist Herbert Foster agreed that fanners need relief. “But this tax (on licensed vehicles) is just not fair.” The proposal before the board would help the big farmers, not the small fanners, he maintained. “Mr. Lane (Nelson Lane of Woodville) has 500 cattle. We’ve got 65. (If the levy on livestock is dropped), somebody’s got to pay Mr. Lane’s tax and who’s it going to be?” he asked. According to Foster, the lost revenue will have to be picked up by his children and others who need cars to drive to their jobs. “That’s just not a fair way to go about it.”
