Too Early?
“Maybe this is all coining too early,” said Jim White. He suggested putting off any changes to personal property tax until it’s possible to look at the total tax picture under the county’s upcoming assessment of land at 100 per cent of market value. He also proposed that the commissioner of revenue provide information on examples of taxes which individuals—not just farmers—will pay after the reassessment and that this be taken into consideration before changes are made in the personal property tax structure.
Newbill Miller maintained that houses, land and motor vehicles are the only three categories of property appriased by a standard and equal method. If the revenue lost from dropping personal property taxes on farm machinery, livestock and household goods is made up by increased taxes on land instead of on licensed vehicles, “it would still be fairer” than the county’s current system, he said. “Praising the Lord in Song” will be the theme for a “Sing Thing” at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church on Sunday, December T, beginning at 2:30 in the afternoon. About a dozen local vocal and instrumental groups have been invited, and the congregation will have ample opportunity to raise their voices and sing along.
