of the crazy zoomies (U.S. flyers) buzzing the harbor. But when I got to the bottom of the slide, there was this tremendous explosion instead of a crash.” Still, Pond wasn't alarmed, dismissing the explosion as just a one of the crazier zoomies dropping a bomb in the harbor.

It was the bomb being dropped on the Arizona. The same mess cook who had warned Pond to hurry for breakfast stuck his head through the hatch and yelled “That’s the Japs bombing us and that’s no-—.”

Pond rushed to his station at the forward anti-aircraft gun to find he was the only member of the gun crew on board. Awnings were up over all the guns to keep the metal decks from frying under the tropic sun. Ammunition was locked away.

Pond appointed volunteers to take the positions of the absent gun crew. “Guys grabbed knives from the galley to cut the awnings down and just threw them over the sides. With the awnings gone, there was still a pipe in front of the gun muzzle. I bent that over the deck. We used bolt cutters to
