Apology
Cafeteria workers were out in force at the school Rappahannock school board’s December 9 meeting to demand a public apology from board members Robert Eastham and Nelson Lane for remarks they made at last month’s session regarding food ‘‘walking away" from the school lunch rooms.
Led by Pat lenkins and Susie Coffey, the cafeteria employees objected to the implication that they were “all thieves". They criticized the two school board members for not specifying exactly who they thought was taking the food and maintained that Eastham and Lane should have investigated before publicly attacking cafeteria employees. In a prepared statement, the staff said they hoped the remarks were “not an example of the way school business is conducted—by hearsay and snap decision” and requested a public apology.
"I’ll be the first to make it.’’ Nelson Lane replied, adding that he wouldn't reveal the names of the five “good citizens” who allegedly reported cafeteria problems to him. "I certainly didn't intend to smear you. I should have investigated first. Maybe I should have reserved my remarks for executive session. I certainly didn’t intend for them to make the press.” he said. According to Lane, the reports to him concerned only the high school.
