“You’re asking too much to take all the personal property tax off household goods and put it on cars.” maintained Jack Miller. Gas prices are steadily increasing, he said, and without public transportation, commuters must use cars to drive to jobs. “If they can’t drive to work, they’ll have to go on relief. They can’t get work here,” Miller maintained.

He insisted that the county’s current tax system even with its inequities is still the fairest method of raising revenue. “Is any property assessed equally in Rappahannock County? Any house? Any farm?” Miller asked, reporting that in the county’s ongoing reassessment, the Ordmans’ property near Hint Hill has been appraised at $1,600 while land with good timber just across the road is valued at $800 an acre.
