In addition to decimating the school population, the influenza epidemic has taken its toll among workers at county and state offices and in local businesses. Of 42 cases treated at the Rappahannock Medical Ginic on Monday, Dr. Jerry Martin reported that 32 appeared to be the result of a flu virus.
"Every year, we always have some flu." Martin said, adding that he suspects the county is right in the middle of an epidemic of an A type influenza virus, probably an Asian strain. Individuals who've recently had flu shots are generally protected against infection, Martin said. Others aren’t so lucky.
