This type of influenza usually runs its course in two to four days, the doctor said, with a few infections hanging on for as long as a week. ■ In most cases, Martin said, he prescribes aspirin, plenty of fluids and rest. He noted, however, that there is a drug available, brand name symeltrel, which if administered before infection can prevent cathing the virus or at least lessen its severity. If given to a patient with the flu, symeltrel can ease symptoms.
But Martin said he rearely uses the drug, believing it to be of benefit primarily with high risks, those over 65 with underlying respiratory problems or conditions, such as emphysema, brodhhis or diabetes. These individuals have a much greater chance of developing complications — Primarily pneumonia—from influenza, Martin said.
Antigenic shifts enable flu viruses to break out periodically, Martin continued. “The viruses change themselves year to year,” the doctor explained, with a big shift coming every three to four years. Then the antibodies built up by the body from previous exposure are no longer effective in combating the virus, he said.
