“We’re not in the business of tempting anyone employed by this board to be weak at a weak moment ... We’re attempting to lock the vault door,” Eastham continued. He described the cafeteria workers as "honorable, honest citizens'’ and said he didn't intend to accuse anyone NOW serving the school board of dishonesty.
According to Eastham, the board wants the controls a complete audit provides primarily for the protection of school employees. “If I have offended, I do apologize. My intention was pure. It was my duty and I stick by it.” he concluded.
“What I heard was not against this year's cafeteria staff," Lane added. He agreed with Eastham that he’d used the case to support good accounting practices, “not for the sake of honesty but for budgeting.”
