“I’m not apologizing... I regret the paper chose to print that,” said Robert East ham. He maintained that neither he nor Lane accused anyone of converting public property to private use but had made their remarks only to buttress their support of a complete audit for the cafeteria and activity funds.
“I have heard it not once but many times, not just about the cafeteria but about other areas.” he stated. Eastham added, however, that if he is ever given specific information on any school employee converting public money or property to personal use, he will report, not to the school board, but to the commonwealth’s attorney and grand jury.
He maintained it's the school board's duty ”to carefully care for, manage and control the property of this school division.” Over the past three years, Eastham said, the auditor has stated that school records are not adequate to determine if all receipts are recorded because controls are concentrated in one person. But if school employees aren’t trusted," they wouldn't be kept on, he added.
