Hammering out a compromise at Monday’s special meeting, the Rappahannock supervisors voted unanimously to drop household goods, livestock and farm machinery from the county’s personal property tax rolls.
Lost revenue will be made up with higher levies on licensed vehicles and land, with the increase on vehicles to be no more than 30 per cent of the total generated by this year’s automotive license tax.
In addition, the supervisors requested commonwealth’s attorney Douglas Baumgardner to check whether or not merchants' capital tax may also be eliminated, indicating their intention to do so if state law allows.
Last month, the board advertised for public hearing a proposal to drop personal property taxes on household goods, farm machinery and livestock. intending to replace lost revenues with money generated by taxing motor vehicles at 100 per cent of finance value.
