Survivors include his wife, Ada Compton Hitt; a son. Junior Lee Hitt of Hanover, Pa.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Aldean Compton Hitt of Rixeyville; two step-sons, William L. Compton, Rixeyville, and Elzie R. Compton, Culpeper, and two grandchildren.
Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Alpha Mae Sutphin of Culpeper, and a brother, Roy H. Hitt of Rixeyville.
A funeral service was conducted Sunday at the Gore Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. James W. Crane. Interment was at Forest Grove Cemetery at Viewtown.
Coates
- Funeral services for Ray Thomas Coates of Haywood were conducted Wednesday at the Gore Funeral Home Chapel in Culpeper by the Rev. Harold Eaton. Burial was in the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery in Haywood.
Mr. Coates, 74, died Sunday, December 14, 1980, at his residence. He was a retired carpenter and was a native of Madison County. He was the son of the late William Edward and Audrey Blankenbaker Coates.
Mr. Coates is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Newman Coates of Haywood; five sisters, Mrs. Verna Tanner, and Mrs. Fannie Carpenter, both of Haywood, Mrs. Mildred Mathews of Orange, Mrs. Virginia Curtis of Culpeper and Mrs. Frances Thornhill of Boston; 11 brothers, W. E. Coates Jr. and Paul Coates, both of Etlan, C. E. Coates, John Coates, Robert Coates, Charlie Coates, ’ Delmar Coates, Joe Coates and James Coates, all of Culpeper, Hugh Coates of Haywood, and . Clayton Coates of Norfolk.
