cattle future, Williams predicted that “most likely prices” for the first three quarters in 1981 on 900-1,100 pound choice steers will be 71 cents per pound (Jan.-Mar.), 75 cents per pound (Apr.June), and 74 cents per pound (July-Sept.) According to Williams, "optimistic” prices for the same three quarters will be 74 cents, 78 cents and 77 cents per pound.
For feeder steers in the 600-700 pound range, the market specialist set “most likely” prices for the first three quarters of 1981 as 75 cents, 85 cents and 85 cents and “optimistic” prices for the same period at 80 cents, 90 cents and 90 cents per pound. For 400-500 pound steers, he predicted “most likely” prices of 80 cents, 95 cents and 92 cents per pound for the three quarters of the year.
Although his predictions call for cattle prices to be on the upswing for at least the next two years, Williams emphasized repeatedly the necessity for farmers to watch his indicators for signs of a price drop. “We might be able to avoid one if enough producers slow down a little,” he concluded.
